Lesson 1

Oxygen Uptake, Carbon Dioxide Output, and Work Rate as related to Time

VO2 and VCO2 versus time and work rate, and slope showing predicted rate of increase in VO2 for the work rate increase (diagonal line).

This is the first panel we address when interpreting if a patient is limited in exercise performance, because this plot gives a global assessment of the presence of exercise limitation. The ∆VO2/∆WR is commonly abnormal in patients with cardiovascular disease, with a pattern varying with defect. The VCO2 increases faster than the VO2 above AT even when the rate of VO2 increase is reduced.

Question: Is the exercise capacity reduced? (panel 3)

Example of Disorder: (if yes) Any disorder

Markers for Abnormality: Maximum VO2 not achieved
